Why Do People Snore?

Snoring arises when the muscles in the airway of the throat overly relax, causing it to obstruct the air that we breathe in and out during sleep. This unstable airflow can cause the tissue in the roof of the mouth and the throat to vibrate, making the snoring sound.

Snoring can vary in sound and severity and most people have snored at sometime. In some cases it can be soft, however as many know it can also be loud. It’s this loud snoring that often affects the sleep quality of snorers and their partners causing sleep deprivation. This can lead to a drowsy feeling during the day, lack of concentration and decrease in libido. It can also have significant psychological and social impacts on the snorer.

Loud excessive snoring could be a sign of sleep related breathing disorders like Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). A sleep study at a sleep apnea clinic can be administered to find out what causes the snoring, the severity and any sleep-related disorders that may be associated with the snoring. A visit to a sleep apnea dentist may also help stop snoring in your sleep.
